Many surface problems are not created only at the coating stage. They may already be built into the product when geometry, holes, connections, and post-machining are defined. Involving surface engineering earlier is generally more effective than relying on repeated correction after the finished product has been made.

Geometry affects powder accessibility and surface coordination

Flat areas, gradual curves, and open structures have different accessibility from deep narrow grooves, closed cavities, and mutually shielded surfaces. Extreme sharp edges and very small details also cannot be evaluated reliably from experience with a flat panel alone.

This does not mean designers must abandon distinctive geometry. The objective is to identify critical locations and create a reasonable transition between visual intent and stable manufacturing.

Edge design affects tactile feel and in-use risk

Desktop fronts, door perimeters, and pull areas are frequently touched. Very sharp edges can make coating formation more demanding and may also create tactile, handling, or impact concerns.

Radii, bevels, and edge profiles should be selected together with the product positioning and confirmed on realistically sized samples rather than only in renderings or CAD views.

Holes and post-machining define the continuity boundary

Hardware holes, cable openings, pull grooves, and installation holes may be processed at different stages. Cutting or drilling after the surface is complete can expose the substrate again. Drawings should therefore identify what is completed before coating, what must be done later, and how post-machined locations are managed.

Hanging and clamping positions should also be coordinated with the assembly structure and kept away from important visible areas wherever practical. Otherwise, process locations may end up exactly where the customer places the highest appearance requirement.

Assembly tolerance affects the final product

The coating becomes part of the component’s dimensions and surface. Joint gaps, drawer clearances, hinge adjustment, and interfaces with metal parts therefore need appropriate allowance. Validating only an individual panel without the assembly can allow rubbing or overly tight fit to appear later.

Design, sourcing, manufacturing, and quality teams should work from the same controlled drawing version and agree on surface scope and assembly requirements.
