What Product-Design Changes Are Needed When Moving from Laminates to Powder-Coated Surfaces?

A mature laminated product cannot simply have its decorative surface and edge band removed and then be sent directly into powder coating. The two surface routes interpret substrate, geometry, edges, holes, assembly, and quality standards differently, so the product needs to be re-engineered.

Reconfirm why the product should change

The brand should first define the objective: reducing visible edge-band lines, enabling complex profiles, building a solid-color range, improving coordination between front and back surfaces, or creating a differentiated export product. Different objectives justify different structural changes and levels of development effort.

If the current laminated product is already mature, has a clear cost advantage, and has no meaningful design or use-case problem, conversion may not create sufficient value. Technology selection should serve the product strategy rather than follow a new process for its own sake.

Redesign edges and geometry

Laminated products are often structured around flat-sheet coverage and edge bands. Powder-coated surfaces may allow radii, bevels, grooves, and integrated pulls, but existing sharp edges, edge-band grooves, or local material interfaces may need reassessment.

Any design change should consider powder accessibility, tactile use, cleaning, and repeatable inspection. The goal should not be to add extreme details merely to advertise the absence of a conventional edge band.

Re-plan holes and assembly

Some laminated products are drilled or machined after decorative finishing. If the same sequence is retained after conversion, post-cutting, post-drilling, or forced assembly may interrupt the continuous surface and create rubbing damage.

Drawings should define pre- and post-coating operations, hanging locations, hardware tolerances, and protection methods, and these decisions should be confirmed on an assembled product rather than an isolated panel.

Rebuild the cost and quality model

Comparison should not stop at a surface price per square meter. Substrate machining, decorative materials, edge banding, rework, assembly, packaging, batch consistency, and product positioning should be considered together.

Quality criteria also need to change. Instead of focusing mainly on seams and edge-band matching, the new standard should define front and back surfaces, edges, profiled areas, coating performance, and batch stability, with separate release points for samples, trial production, and mass production.
