What Do Adhesion, Hardness, and Scratch Resistance Actually Tell You?
A sound performance evaluation does not search for one universal metric; it connects different test results to the actual risks the product will face in use.
Customers often group adhesion, hardness, and scratch resistance under one question: “Is the surface hard enough?” In reality, these tests look at different properties. A satisfactory result in one test cannot replace an overall assessment of the finished product.

Adhesion focuses on the bond between coating and substrate
Adhesion indicates the coating’s ability to resist separation under a defined test method. The result is influenced by the substrate, surface condition, coating formation, and specimen structure, and it is an important indicator of whether a basic coating-to-substrate bond has been established.
An adhesion result, however, applies to the tested specimen and method. It does not automatically prove scratch resistance, impact performance, moisture-related performance, or long-term durability. Different geometries and areas may also require separate evaluation.
Hardness focuses on resistance to indentation or marking
Hardness can help describe how a coating surface responds to localized mechanical action, but “harder is always better” is not a valid product rule. Overemphasizing one hardness value can overlook flexibility, substrate movement, and the tactile experience of the finished surface.
Furniture should be balanced around its use case. A desktop, cabinet door, and decorative component experience different actions, so one isolated hardness grade should not be used to represent total quality.
Scratch resistance is closer to everyday contact risks
Scratch-resistance testing looks at how the surface behaves when exposed to rubbing, pointed contact, or dragged objects. Results depend on the contacting object, the way force is applied, and the inspection criteria, so the test conditions need to be stated.
Keys, cutlery, cleaning tools, and packaging abrasion are not equivalent use conditions. The customer should define the main risk first and then select a validation method that represents that risk reasonably.
The three indicators must be returned to the complete product
Performance tests often use flat coupons or representative components, while the delivered product also contains edges, grooves, holes, and assembly areas. Appearance, adhesion, hardness, scratch resistance, stain-related performance, and suitability for the target environment should therefore be evaluated as a layered set of requirements.
A test name is not a product certification. Any statement such as “meets,” “passes,” or a quoted performance grade should be traceable to the specific specimen, method, conditions, and approved record.
